Gurgaon News: Symposium on International Criminal Law spreads awareness among ITM students

Gurgaon News: A joint initiative of ITM Law School and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
ITM Law School, today organized a symposium on “International Criminal Law” in association with International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in a bid to promote and participate in the campaign against war crimes and genocides.
ITM Law School is a part of ITM University, a University amongst India’s foremost independent multidisciplinary universities.
The day long conference was inaugurated by Mr. Gudmundur Eiriksson, Ambassador of Iceland to India. Explaining the scenarios which led to the Rome Statute establishing the International Criminal Court, Mr. Gudmundur Eiriksson said, “The mechanism of international criminal justice emerged from the need to address the growing concerns of war crime and grave human right violations.”
“I am very glad to see the interest ITM has shown towards spreading the awareness of international criminal law. This initiative will definitely empower the law students, to get in-depth knowledge of international criminal law and improve the current scenario of international criminal justice,” he added.
According to Prof. S Shanthakumar, Director, ITM Law School, “The area of international criminal law is relatively a new branch of jurisprudence. This emerging branch requires more exposure and programs of this nature will have great potential to address this need. It is an effort from our side to participate in the campaign against war crimes and genocides.”
On the occasion, Mr. Manoj Kumar Sachdeva, Trial Lawyer – Prosecution Division, International Criminal Court, Hague, Netherlands, delivered the key note address. Mr. Manoj Kumar, the De Facto lead counsel who oversaw and managed the first trial at the ICC, spoke at length about his experience. His first trial, “Prosecutor vs. Thomas Lubanga”, resulted in a conviction at the ICC.
Mr. Simon Peter Brooks, Deputy Head, International Committee of the Red Cross, Regional Delegation for South Asia presided over the symposium. Prof. S Shanthakumar, Director, ITM Law School and Dr. Sanoj Rajan, Academic Programmes Responsible, ICRC, South Asia Regional Delegation, New Delhi also shared the dais with the eminent guests.
