Haryana Education Minister Mrs. Geeta Bhukkal stressed the need for making women socially and economically empowered.
Mrs. Bhukkal was addressing an interactive session on “Women Empowerment” organized by PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Chandigarh today.
While expressing concern over the data presented in a seminar on “Women Political Leadership” held recently at Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, Mrs. Bhukkal said that the political participation of women is less in India. In Lok Sabha, it is only 10.8 per cent whereas in Rajya Sabha it is 10.3 per cent. Appreciating the performance of ace-shuttler, Ms Saina Nehwal’s in recently concluded London Olympics, she said that our girls are bringing laurels not only to the state but for the whole country.
She said that with a view to empower women commission, Haryana State Women Commission Bill-2012 has been passed in recently held session of Haryana Vidhan Sabha. This would provide legal status and power to State Women Commission.
Mrs. Bhukkal said that State Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister, Mr. Bhupinder Singh Hooda, is taking number of steps to ensure the women empowerment. The first Women University of the country had been set up in Khanpur Kalan, a rural area in Sonepat and a medical college for women was also being set up there. She said that the declining sex ratio was a issue of grave concern for which both Central and State Government are making efforts, but common people also have to ensure their participation in it.
